After weather related delays earlier this week, ship traffic is moving again on the river. Pilots have a weather window between storms to get ships moving again. So you may see quite a few vessels passing by today and tonight as they attempt to get as many ships as safely possible in and out of the river before out next storm rolls in, so far predicted for tomorrow or Saturday. “Wx Permitting” indicates a ship has been asked to wait for better weather. Not all ships have the horsepower to cross the bar in difficult conditions.

Note: Because we are primarily an export region, the majority of merchant ships traveling on the Columbia are here to load cargo and deliver it elsewhere. Ships that are here to deliver cargo are marked “(D).” Ships delivering cargo here that do not have a return cargo to pick up before they leave the river can take on ballast water, to replace the weight and stability that cargo afforded them on their inbound journey. Transit times are approximate and may change without notice.
