Polar Star returns from Antarctica

I always like talking about this ship, because of her unique job and the role she plays in keeping people safe in a challenging part of the world. The USCG icebreaker Polar Star is a ship specially designed to handle difficult conditions that would sink most vessels. Ship handling: art and science

Feb 18, 2020

This week we continue hearing excerpts from an archive interview I did in 2006 with Capt. Robert Johnson, Columbia River Bar Pilot, about car ships. The interview evolved into a discussion on ship handling, GM, righting arm and other specialized subjects that engineers and professional mariners know well, but we ordinary mortals are not necessarily familiar with. Fascinating stuff about how and why ships stay afloat and don’t just flip over and sink. So here’s more on car ships and ship handling Capt. Johnson.

CBD and the U.S. Coast Guard

Feb 12, 2020

This week the U.S. Coast Guard issued a warning to their personnel: beware of using products that contain CBD, a non-psychoactive compound derived from marijuana, used for pain relief and other benefits. Experts warn that even trace amounts of THC in such products can cause a positive result on a drug test. Since marijuana is             illegal under federal law, this can lead to mandatory suspension and other unwanted, career ending consequences.
