The Pacific NW Offshore race begins

This morning, 50 boats will set off from the mouth of the Columbia River headed for Victoria, BC, participating in the 50th annual Pacific NW Offshore race. These are racing and cruising sailboats approximately 30 to 40 feet long (some larger). They'll spend a couple of days at sea in windy, rainy conditions. We'll take a look at what's in store for racers, and also how you can track their progress.

But most people don’t realize that the fresh-caught, wild fish we love so much is caught, for the most part, by small business owners, fishermen and women who go out in relatively small boats, catching fish and crab in horrible weather. Today’s show is about appreciating the people who catch our dinner.

Heavy lift ship heads downriver

The heavy lift ship Combi Dock I will be headed downriver this weekend on the Columbia. She came into the river Monday loaded with 98 wind turbine blades destined for wind power project upgrades in eastern Washington state.

We’ll take a closer look at this unusual ship. 

Note: this morning when I did the Report she was on the schedule to leave this afternoon. Now here ETD is Saturday. A good example of how ship departure and arrival times can change on a dime.
