The 50th anniversary of the wreck of the famous Great Lakes ore carrier, the Edmund Fitzgerald

Today marks 50 years since the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior on November 10, 11975 in Lake Superior. The Mighty Fitz, as she was called, was caught in the midst of a fierce storm with hurricane force winds. The ship was 17 miles from port when she was lost. All 29 members of her crew perished. This incident is commemorated in regional ceremonies each year, as residents honor these lost mariners, and all those who have lost their lives over the years in thousands of wrecks...

The back eddy: a cool and sometimes useful tidal anomaly on the Columbia

I happened to be looking out over the Columbia River in Astoria this week and saw an interesting water anomaly that I’d never noticed before. It turned out to be an effect from a tidal eddy, something to watch out for if you’re in a small boat, and another sign of the power of our mighty river and the moon and sun, which conspire together to create our tides.

Rose Festival Fleet update, and change of plans

It looks like the last of the military vessels arriving for the Rose Festival in Portland are passing by us today on the river. We saw a change of plans for one ship, the USS Lake Champlain, which had been at the Port of Astoria for the past few days – she headed out to sea yesterday, after what was evidently a change in orders. But we have another arriving US Navy ship this morning. So there will be plenty to sea at the festival this weekend.

Who will be coming upriver for Fleet week

Today we’ll hear about when ships will be coming upriver for Fleet Week for the Portland Rose Festival.

Here’s a quick look at the ships that will be coming in from out in the Pacific and heading to Portland as part of the Rose Festival Fleet:

Tuesday

  • HMCS Yellowknife – Vancouver BC to Portland – Ast~5:30am/Ptld~2pm

Wednesday

  • HMCS Nanaimo – Canada to Portland – Ast~5:30am/Ptld~2pm
  • HMCS Edmonton – Canada to Portland – Ast~5:30am/Ptld~2pm

Thursday

  • USS Lake Champlain – Port of Astoria to Portland – Dep Ast~8am/Ptld~4pm

This schedule is for ships entering the river from the Pacific Ocean to attend the Rose Festival. There will be other vessels in attendance at the festival that are already on the river and will be in Portland.
