We’ll even hear from an old Fisher Poet favorite – talking about his favorite color for a working boat.

Seafarers Happiness Index hits 8-year low

Today we’ll talk about the most recent Seafarers Happiness Index report for the first quarter of the year. Things aren’t looking good – the index has dropped to an 8-year low – partly because of remaining pandemic woes. The war in Ukraine is another big issue – affecting many people because so many sailors are from that part of the world. Seaboard life can be uncomfortable now for Ukrainian and Russian seafarers, who often serve together, especially for Ukrainians who may be separated from family ( esp. in war torn areas) by their work obligations.

COVID remains an issue despite on cruise ships despite high vax rates and safety protocols

Some cruise ship COVID news involving a ship that was just in Astoria on Monday: this ship and others are being monitored by the CDC for relatively high COVID case counts during the past month. It’s part of a trend as case rates on cruises reflect the rise in COVID in the general population, fueled by variant strains of the virus.

Young Oregon woman is now the 15th female USCG surfman

Today we’ll talk about the achievements of an intrepid young Oregon woman who has become one of only 15 women to become a USCG surfman. Surfmen are those skiilled folks on board the motor lifeboats that go out regularly on our local waters saving lives, often under challenging conditions.
