Today we continue hearing excerpts from my chat with Christi Lee Dunham, who works as a ships or vessel agent locally here on the Columbia. Yesterday we learned a bit about her background in the maritime industry, and why she chose this field of work.
Today Christi answers a basic question, one that requires a detailed (and very interesting answer): what is a ships agent, and what do they do?

While we talk from time to time here on the show about those shipments of huge white blades, tower parts and naselles that make their way upriver on big ships, today we’ll talk more in detail about wind turbine parts: where they’re from, where they’re going and how they get there. Along with interesting trivia like: how much does one blade weigh?

It will be hard to ignore the weather here for the next few days at least… the weather service is tossing around terms like “gale force” winds and “atmospheric river.” We’ll take a look at those terms, and at the forecast, which includes the potential for inches of rain.
For folks on land, our weather will be worthy of a hot cup of tea, a good book, and a warm pet nearby if you have one (or two). For mariners at sea, it means a lot more work to get things done, and to get from one place to another safely.
In short, it’s autumn on the coast – so snuggle in if you can.

Just a few days ago, one survivor from a lost fishing vessel was found floating alone in a liferaft off the Pacific Coast, 70 miles NW of Cape Flattery, by a Canadian fishing boat whose crew happened to see him. He’s safe now and recovering on land, but no doubt has harrowing memories of his own survival and the loss of the boat and its captain.
What’s our role as community members in a tragedy like this? Some of it may involve holding space, and holding our questions till later, as traumatized people get their bearings.
